Audio channels mixed up on XBMC on Apple TV 2

The XBMC Team has made the Apple TV so much better just a couple of days ago by releasing XBMC for iOS. Unfortunately I ran into some issues when I wanted to play back MKV files with AC3 surround sound. The audio channels were all mixed up. Center speaker came from back right, front right was left, etc. To fix this issue I had to enable AC3 playback “by hand”, as described in this forum thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=91729

Also make sure that you have selected “7.1″ or “5.1″ in the System Settings of XBMC. It’s default setting seems to be 2.0.

Starting 1Password with LaunchBar

Launchbar and 1Password are two of these nifty tools, that make working on OSX both even more easy and fun. Unfortunately starting 1Password with LaunchBar does not work, because as soon as you type in the “1″, LaunchBar goes into calculator mode. You could of course disable the calculator, but I personally need this function a couple of times every day.

Here’s how to start 1Password with Launchbar without going into Calculator mode.

Choose “Show Index” from the LaunchBar menu. You need to hit your LaunchBar keyboard combo to show the menu.

Choose “Applications” and edit the “1Password” field by slowly clicking twice (no double click).

Change “1Password” to “OnePassword” or whatever you want to call it. Close and save the Index window.

You can now start 1Password by starting to type “OnePassword”. This doesn’t change the name of the application file, you have just changed the name you have to type to start the application. Actually you could customize all references in LaunchBar like this.

Renting US TV shows on Apple TV outside the US

If you have a US-based iTunes Store account, but access the store with the new Apple TV from outside the US, you shouldn’t be able to rent TV shows. The store only shows the “Preview” button, then actual “Rent for 0,99$” button is missing. Apple obviously does a IP location lookup due to TV licensing restrictions, just like hulu.com.

But there is a way around this issue. What you need to do is sign in once to the store with a US based IP adress from the new Apple TV. This can be done by using a US based VPN service. I use blackvpn which will currently give you 2 month free if you use the referral code ZDMXVQU when signing up.

Currently you will only need the VPN connect one time so you wont have to sign and pay a long running contract.

What you do is set up the VPN on your Mac computer according to the VPNB providers guidelines (it’s easy!) using your built in Wi-Fi.
Connect the Apple TV to your Mac with a network cable.
On your Mac enable “Internet sharing” in the Sharing preference pane and select to share “Ethernet” (from the “To computers using” box) to your VPN connection from the “Share your connection from” drop down.
Test if the Apple TV can still access the Internet by trying to load a Youtube video. If it doesn’t, make sure your VPN connection and Internet sharing is set up correctly.
Unplug the power of your Apple TV, wait a couple of seconds and plug it in again. Unplug the network cable from your Apple TV.

After the Apple TV restarted, test the internet connection. Your store location should now be set to “US” and renting TV shows should be enabled. You can even unplug the Apple TV and it will still think it’s in the US. Neat!

Google Chrome für OS X

Seit zwei Tagen benutze ich nun Google Chrome für OS X und bin bisher von dem neuen Browser hellauf begeistert. Vor allem die Geschwindigkeit sowohl beim Start, als auch beim Laden und Aufbauen der Seiten ist phänomenal. Bei mir hat sogar der von mir eingesetzte Pre-release den mitlerweile verfetteten und langsamen Firefox ersetzt.

Ein aktuelles Developer Build von Chrome für Apple OS X kann direkt bei Google downloaded werden.

Bisher habe ich einen Absturz erlebt, verursacht durch den gleichzeitigen Download von einem halben Dutzend größerer (300 MB) Files. Was ich noch vermisse ist ein Download-Manager für Chrome, der zB mehrere Verbindungen zu einem Download aufbauen kann.
Hoffentlich wird so eine Funktion bald über eine Chrome Extension verfügbar sein. Diverse Extension sind zum Beispiel auf http://www.chromeextensions.org/ zu finden.

Wer sich nach der Installation einer Extension fragt, wie er sie wieder entfernen kann, muss folgende Seite in seinem Browser aufrufen: chrome://extensions/

Noch ist Chrome für OS X etwas Unrund, es fehlt noch ein Bookmark Manager und an einigen Ecken merkt man noch den Developer status. Für mich ist er aber schon in seiner jetzigen Form produktiv einsetzbar und überzeugt vor allem durch die Geschwindigkeit.

Der Spiegel und die Mac-Überschrift

Nach der gestrigen Vorstellung der neuen Macbooks war man sich bei spiegel.de wohl nciht ganz sicher, welche Überschrift denn nun am besten zu dem Artikel passen würde. Im RSS Feed kann man nämlich jede einzelne Version sehen, wenn die Redakteure die Überschrift nach der Veröffentlichung nochmal anpassen.

Und so sieht die Historie aus:

Aus dem besseren Macbook wurde also schnell das billigere und (aus welchen Gründen auch immer) dann das “ein bisschen” billigere. Stimmt alles irgendwie, aber man fragt sich schon, was da in der Redaktion vorgeht. Haben die keinen Journalismus zu betreiben?

iPhone 3G Keyboard Lag

The keyboard input of my iPhone 3G is really slow at the moment. Check the video to see what I mean. The keyboard seems to have a lag and only types like 1 character every 1/2 second. This only concerns mail, writing SMS works just fine. Think I got to reboot the frigging thing once again…

Update Installing the 2.0.1 Update from Apple for the iPhone should fix this error!

iPhone 3G Akku besser als sein Ruf

Die amerikanische Zeitschrift PC WORLD hat jetzt die oft kritisierte Batterielaufzeit des iPhone 3G getestet und mit den wichtigsten Telefonen des Wettbewerbs verglichen. Dabei ist erstaunlich, dass das iPhone nicht nur eine längere Laufzeit als alle Mitbewerber hatte, sondern selbst die von Apple versprochene Sprechzeit von 5 Stunden um 38 Minunten übertrifft.

Batterielaufzeit des iPhone 3G verbessern
Aufgrund des höheren Strombedarfs des UMTS Netzes liegt die Batterielaufzeit natürlich unter der des klassischen iPhones. Mit einem Trick lässt sich allerdings die Laufzeit des iPhone 3G weiter erhöhen. Dazu muss man einfach die 3G Funktion abschalten. Man verliert dabei zwar den hohen Datenduchsatz des UMTS Netzes bei der Datenübertragung aber dafür hält die Batterie des iPhone 3G länger.

Dazu kann man unter Einstellungen -> Allgemein -> Netzwerk den Schalter “3G aktivieren” abschalten. Danach sollte sich die Batterielaufzeit ein wenig verlängern.

Bluetooth iPhone 3G im BMW Z4

Zumindest die kleineren T-Punkte in München Pasing und Laim waren seeeeeeehr dünn mit Geräten bestückt. Zum Glücl hat Laim erst eine halbe Stunde später geöffnet, denn in Pasing gab es nur für die ersten 3 Leute eins. Ich war dann der erste in der Reihe und hab eins der beiden freien Geräte in Laim bekommen. 16GB in Schwarz, genauso wie ich es wollte. Es kamen bestimmt noch 5 Leute in den Laden, die ganz locker ein iPhone 3G verlangt haben und dann unverrichteter Dinge wieder abziehen mussten.

Das beste ist: Sogar die Bluetooth Kopplung im BMW funktioniert.

Ideal ist die Befestigung des iPhone in einer Autohalterung.

Tastaturreinigung mit Folgen

Prinzipiell ist es recht einfach eine eingesaute Apple-Tastatur (alte Bauart) zu reinigen. Alle Tasten rausreissen, die darunter liegende Deckplatte abschrauben, sich über die ca. 50 winzigen Schräubchen ärgern, darauf aufpassen, dass die darunter sitzenden Gumminippel nicht verrutschen unda dann Tasten und Platte ab in die Spülmaschine. Nach dem Spülgang und der anschließenden Schrauborgie beim zusammenbasteln hat man eine Tastatur, die oberflächlich nagelneu ist. Leider funktionierte bei mir die Space Taste trotzdem nicht mehr ganz so problemlos. Eben so schelcht, dass sie bei jedem etwa zwanzigtsen Drücken nicht richtig auslöste. Anstatt das naheliegende zu tun und irgendwie wieder für eine bessere Gängigkeit zu sorgen hab ich mir mal die neue Apple Tastatur geholt, in der USB-Variante. Der fehlende Ziffernblock und vor alle die Winz-Cursortasten sind einfach ein KO-Kriterium für die Bluetooth-Variante.

Das Schreibgefühl auf der Notebook-Style Tastatur ist toll. Ich habe mir schon mal vor ein paar Jahren eine Notebook-Ähnliche von Logitech geholt und war auch damit sehr zufrieden. Die fristet jetzt ihr dasein als sporadisches Eingabeinstrument an meinem Server.

Die neue Apple Tastatur ist wirklich toll. Alleine der fehlende Apfel auf den Cmd-Tasten ist ein wenig traurig. Die Umstellung der Funktionstasten für Expose ist auch ein bißchen gewöhnungsbedürftig.
